In my time among the college philosophical community and as a member of the American Philosophical Association, I can honestly say I've met many people with similar backgrounds to yours. One particular friend I know was a protestant evangelical missionary who lost his faith over many years. He is now an agnostic (his claim), but I would classify him as an athiest. Another gentleman I knew was a Catholic monk for many years before becoming an athiest as well as an outstanding philosopher specializing in ethics.
Tell me, Arthur, does it bother you as much as it does me that only the religious have the claim (within the world at large) to acts of charity? And do you find it refreshing that President Obama acknowledged athiests?
